The roundtable is organized by the DIRPOLIS Institute in collaboration with the SGRI (Italian Standing Group of International Relations) of the SISP (Italian Society of Political Science). This is the first meeting dedicated to the "return of geopolitics" in the study of international relations.

ABSTRACT

In recent times, the term "geopolitics" has made its comeback within the public and the scholarly debate, as a tool for describing the current transformations of international politics. From the creation of a "geopolitical Europe" to the rising tensions between the US and China, international relations are one more time seen and analyzed in terms of power politics and competition among states, while the possibilities for international cooperation are declining and the attention on human rights is fading. Starting from these premises, what does the “return of geopolitics” tell us about the current transformation of the international system? What have been the turning points which conditioned this return? How can critical geopolitics and IR work together, for deconstructing the causes and the narratives which are determining the “return of geopolitics”?
